From the boxing ring to the classroom for a group of veterans taking steps into coaching
From the boxing ring to the classroom, veterans are getting fighting fit while learning how to train others - and transforming lives in the process.
The Fighting Chance, a London-based non-profit which holds boxing sessions for veterans across London, has launched an training pathway as part of the Thrive Together London programme. The new scheme supports veterans to gain England Boxing-recognised qualifications, helping them build new skills and boost confidence. It could even enable them to move into employment within gyms and boxing clubs.
So far, 11 veterans have successfully completed the introductory Boxing Activator Course, the first level of the progressive system. Four others are set to start the Level 1 qualification soon, while one participant with previous experience is preparing for Level 2 — a milestone that could lead to professional coaching roles.
Imran Khalil, Director of The Fighting Chance, said the initiative was about “more than just throwing punches.”
“Boxing teaches discipline, resilience, and self-belief,” he explained. “Through Thrive Together, we’re giving veterans the chance to channel those qualities into something that improves well-being and opens real career opportunities. Seeing participants progress through these qualifications is incredibly rewarding — it’s proof of what can happen when support and purpose come together.”
The Thrive Together London partnership aims to help veterans regain confidence and reintegrate into civilian life. Beyond the ring, participants take part in classroom sessions, mentoring, and fitness-based learning to develop communication, leadership, and teamwork. Many say the combination of physical and personal development has already helped them reconnect with others and improve their mental health.
Bart Bartholomew, Development Manager at The Fighting Chance, said the success of the first graduates highlights just how transformative the programme can be.
“When these veterans come into the gym, they often carry invisible battle scars,” he said. “What we’re doing is helping them turn those experiences into strength. The qualifications give structure and purpose, but the real change is in how they see themselves — confident, capable, and part of a community again.”
The Fighting Chance began its work offering boxing sessions as a way to improve physical health and mental resilience among veterans. Now, with the addition of the training pathway, the organisation is extending its impact — providing a bridge between sport, education, and meaningful employment.
Dave, an Army veteran who completed the Activator course said: “This has given me real purpose and helped me in my recovery from problems with alcohol and mental health problems. I look forward to getting up in the morning to come to the training sessions. I’ve enjoyed meeting other veterans and have the same camaraderie I had Army. I want to train others so I can help other veterans feel that too.”
The Fighting Chance hopes more veterans will enrol. “Our aim,” said Imran, “is to make sure that every veteran who steps into the ring leaves with more than just fitness — they leave with a future.”
Thrive Together London is led by The Poppy Factory, and funded by The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.
