📖 CASE BACKGROUND

Justin and Amber Hicks were 31-year-old childhood sweethearts shot to death in their Acworth home on November 17, 2021. Their 2-year-old son Jacob was left alone with their bodies for 12 hours. Prosecutors allege neighbor Matthew Lanz drove from Athens, broke in, shot both victims, and fled. Thirty-six hours later he allegedly stabbed a Sandy Springs officer multiple times. Months before, Lanz's brother Austin murdered a Pentagon officer before killing himself. The prosecution relies on cellphone data, a recovered gun, and surveillance footage. No eyewitnesses exist.
