Monsters of the Past (1922) - Full Silent Film, Audio Described

This black-and-white silent film was produced in the year 1922 by Arthur Sterry Coggeshall for the Carnegie Museum during the last year of the Carnegie Quarry excavations at what is now Dinosaur National Monument. The film also shows how the fossils were prepared for display in the Carnegie Museum. Please note that much of the information about ancient life provided in this video is now considered outdated and very inaccurate by most paleontologists. Even for the time, many creative liberties were taken with the information presented. All the stop-motion clips seen in this video were taken from the 1918 silent movie, "The Ghost of Slumber Mountain," including the clips featuring T. Rex and Triceratops (which were never found at the Carnegie Quarry). However, the film does accurately show the process of excavating and preparing fossils in the early 20th century. This film contains some of the earliest movie footage ever taken of dinosaur fossil excavations. Altogether, Arthur Sterry Coggeshall's "Monsters of the Past" certainly holds great historic, cultural, and cinematic value. We hope you enjoy it!
