Dari is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan, alongside Pashto, and serves as a lingua franca across the country. A variety of Persian, Dari is deeply rooted in Afghanistan's culture and history, with influences from classical Persian literature and Islamic scholarship. It is spoken primarily by Tajiks, Hazaras, Aimaqs, and other Persian-speaking communities, as well as being widely used in government, education, media, and commerce. Dari exhibits subtle differences from Iranian Persian, particularly in pronunciation, vocabulary, and some grammatical structures, but remains mutually intelligible with it. With around 15–20 million speakers, including second-language users, Dari plays a vital role in uniting Afghanistan's diverse ethnic groups.

Pashto is an Eastern Iranian language spoken primarily in Afghanistan and Pakistan, particularly among the Pashtun ethnic group. It is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan and holds regional importance in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and other Pashtun-majority areas. Pashto is notable for its unique phonetic characteristics and rich oral and written literary traditions, which include poetry, folklore, and proverbs that express the cultural and historical identity of the Pashtun people. Written in a modified Arabic script, Pashto has approximately 50 million speakers worldwide. The language is known for its complex system of honor and pride, known as "Pashtunwali," which reflects core Pashtun cultural values and plays a significant role in shaping Pashto literature and daily life.
