There are three handshape classification systems commonly used by palmists - and none of them work !
D'Arpentigny was the first to classify handshapes coming up with his seven-fold handshape classification in 1839, based on fingertip shapes and finger qualities. Gustav Carus innovated his four-fold system in 1846, based on the form and function of the hand as to whether it was a prehensile type or a touch type. William Benham made up a novel system of handshape classification based solely on the fleshy mounds of the hands to be found under the fingers and at the base of the palm.

None of the serious handreaders of the last fifty years - including Richard Unger, Andrew Fitzherbert, Johan Hjelmborg, Johnny Fincham, let alone the significant chirological pioneers of the C20th such as Jaquin, Wolff and Spier use these systems. Many consider them extremely flawed.
The most useful handshape classification system uses the four elements - Earth, Water, Fire and Air - developed by Fred Gettings in his seminal work 'The Book of the Hand' (Hamlyn 1965). Gettings is the first person to propose using the elements to classify handshapes basing it on the shape of the palm (square or rectangular) and the relative length of the fingers (long or short). See pp23-75.
