Nowadays, everyone has a childhood hard-luck story and this one’s mine. But rest assured, this isn't an attempt at garnering sympathy. I’m merely trying to paint a picture of the fiery crucible and hellish circumstances under which my unbreakable, adamantine, titanium backbone was forged. I come from a deeply dysfunctional family, scarred by multiple generations of patriarchal chauvinism, dehumanising poverty and systemic oppression under apartheid. I’m also a childhood sexual assault survivor. And the aftermath of the abuse and my troubled home-life dramas awakened and activated several things within me that I believe were core to not only why I came out to my family, but also to the unapologetic, unflinching, don’t-fuck-with-me, manner with which I did.
