Have you ever heard of “toxic squash syndrome?” It’s also known as cucurbitacin poisoning, and it can make you really sick. This is caused by cross-pollination of squash in the same genus, for example, two varieties that are both in the pepo genus.
The good news is that it only affects squash grown from seeds saved of crossed squash and even then it’s somewhat rare; but if you do have a crossed squash that will make you sick, you will know because it will taste bitter, so spit it out and stop eating it!
