Elaine Russell is an award-winning author of three historical novels and six children’s books. She will speak about her historical novel, When the Tamarind Tree Blooms, set in 1931 French colonial Laos: An orphaned métisse (half Lao/half French) searches to discover her past while trying to determine where she fits into the deeply divided Lao and French societies. This unique period of history offers a captivating setting and tells the untold story of how the French treated the métis. Elaine’s close connection to this beautiful country began as research at home in California, then travel to Laos and France, using resources in both English and French.
