This song is old enough that no one is really sure how old it is. I have also seen it called The Gray Silkie of Suleskerry (or Sule Skerry) and I've seen silkie spelled "selkie" as often as not. Other than the fact that I pronounced "comely" wrong in this recording, I adore this song. Love love love it. Hope you do to! Many greats have done this traditional song & a simple search here on YT will give you lots of versions to enjoy. :) #FolkMusic
There is an omitted verse in this recording, here it is [for the curious among you]:
And he had ta'en a purse of gold
And he had placed it 'pon her knee
Saying, "Give to me my wee young son,
And take thee up thy nurse's fee."
ummm... @_@
This recording is from a little album of mine under my old stage name, Moira Cannon, called The Singing Silkie - https://www.amazon.com/music/player/a... - Recorded in 2011 at Angry Folk Studios - Here: I am playing my little folk guitar and singing, plain and simple.

This song seems timely considering that So Cal sea lions are so much in the news over here & they are such neat critters, I hate that they are suffering right now. :( https://www.npr.org/2023/07/11/118674...
Factoid: The lighthouse in Sule Skerry was once a Guinness World Record holder for most remote lighthouse in Scotland (& British Isles?). https://www.nlb.org.uk/lighthouses/su... The first lighthouse you see in this video is just pretty, but the three archival photographs in the remainder of the video are the Sule Skerry lighthouse from different angles & time periods. ~m
