Is belt to drive better than chain drive on a bicycle? A lot of new bikes are coming out with belt drives instead of chains, and there are a lot of advantages to a belt drive on a bike versus a traditional chain. The most important advantage a belt drive system has over a chain is that it lasts significantly longer. The gates carbon fiber drive belt system can last 18,600 miles, or 30 km before it needs to be replaced. That’s many times longer than a traditional bicycle chain set up. If you have a belt, you can’t use a rear derailer. You’ll have to use an internally geared hub, or a pinion drive gearbox on the crank with multiple gears. There are some very good belt drive gear systems with very wide ranges available today. Or in my case, I have a belt drive on a bike with a rear electric hub motor, and I can turn the motor on if I need help getting up a hill or going faster. A belt drive on a bicycle is more reliable and longer lasting than a chain, and it’s an excellent choice if you want to have a reliable, commuter bike, that is very low maintenance. You don’t ever have to oil it, and you’ll rarely have to adjust it, and you can just clean it by hosing it off. That is significantly less maintenance than a bicycle chain and derailer system.
