Exploring the Ancient History of Great Scotland Yard
This little area of Whitehall was named after a succession of Scottish royalty who had stayed in this enclave, dating back as far as 959 AD. As the Whitehall complex expanded, so did Scotland Yard. After the formation of the Metropolitan Police in the early 19th century, Scotland Yard soon became the HQ for the newly formed force and remains so today after a few years away at St James's.
