Here is an overview of checking your camper battery voltage. The demonstrator draws from experience helping customers with low battery issues, and provides some tips.
For example, if the truck isn’t recharging the battery, there may be no access to solar power or shore power. For older trucks, a store-bought voltmeter is recommended; one with a digital readout is shown in the video. It plugs into a 12 V outlet and provides a numerical readout and color-coded assessment of the battery.
Interpreting the readout is then explained, as 12 V is misleading (it only represents 50% capacity). Topping off a 12 V battery (to around 12.7-12.8 V) helps it last longer than if it’s left at a lower charge.
Newer campers have a built-in voltmeter, so voltage readings are always available. The latest digital monitor/voltmeter has a 12 V outlet and 2 USB ports for an accurate look at battery charge state. After all, good voltage is needed to run the refrigerator, lights, furnace, and other camper systems.
