The Population Council in collaboration with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) launched the UNFPA Report ‘State of World Population 2020,’ on July 9.
This year’s State of World Population 2020 report entitled, "Against my will: defying the practices that harm women and girls and undermine equality," highlights the prevalence, roots and drivers of son preference, child marriage and harmful social practices against girls and women.
The report highlights many discriminatory practices that are rooted in gender inequality and human rights violations, preventing millions of girls from meeting their health, education and human potential across the globe. The Report calls on Governments to fulfil their obligations under human rights treaties and meet the target of the UN Sustainable Development Goals of ending harmful practices by the end of this decade.
In addition to the global overview, the report launch offered an opportunity to examine and discuss the social, economic and health challenges that girls and women in Pakistan are facing. The launch was attended by parliamentarians, government officials, reproductive health experts, social leaders and the media.
