Mool Mantra :- The opening section of the Guru Granth Sahib is called the
Mool Mantra. This means ‘essential teaching’ The fact that it is the opening of the sacred text shows that it is very important to Sikhs.

The Mool Mantra was written by Guru Nanak and gives a short description of what God is like (also known as God’s nature).

Mool Mantra in Punjabi :-

ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ॥1॥

Mool Mantra in English :-

Ik oa(n)kaar sath naam karathaa purakh nirabho niravair akaal moorath ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh ॥
॥ jap ॥
aadh sach jugaadh sach ॥ hai bhee sach naanak hosee bhee sach ॥1॥

Meaning of Mool Mantra :-

Ik Onkar - There is only one God
Sat Naam - Truth is his name
Karta Purkh - He is the Creator
Nir Bhau - He is without fear
Nir Vair - He is without hate
Akaal Moorat - He is immortal, without form
Ajooni - He is beyond birth and death
Saibhang - He is self-illuminated (self-existent)
Gur Parsaad - He is realised (made known) by the kindness of the true Guru
Aadh sach - True at the beginning,
Jugaadh sach - true through the ages,
Hai bhee sach - is yet true,
Naanak hosee bhee sach - O Nanak, and will be true.
