Holly Grange Mansion - Ex Prisoner Governor's House

Описание: On our weekend trip to the Isle of Wight for exploring, we took a visit to this abandoned Prisoner Governor's House, which was part of the old, now abandoned HMP Camp Hill Prison, located directly across the road from here.

Winston Churchill opened the prison in 1912 and £96,500 had been spent on its construction. No other prisons of this type were to be built.

The prison had 2 chapels, a Roman Catholic chapel and a Church of England chapel. One was accessible to the prison guards and their families by a small lane called ‘Abbey Road’. This second chapel was demolished in the late 80’s or early 90’s.

To the South and East of the prison houses were built, mostly for prison guards.

The largest of these houses was this one we explore here, named ‘Holly Grange’ which was the Governor’s house. The adjacent ‘The Firs’ would have been the medical officers house and next to this the chaplains house. Further smaller houses spread out into a small estate.

We couldn't find a lot of history on this mansion online, apart from that it was built approximately in 1926, according to County Press, and it is assume it went abandoned at some point in the late 80s, early 90s, due to it being left vacant over one winter and the pipes froze and it was flooded and then it was abandoned.

It's last use before becoming completely abandoned was as a training centre for staff at the adjacent (and equally abandoned HMP Camp Hill). HMP Camp Hill has been vacant since 2013 but is sadly nigh on inaccessible being pretty much sandwiched between two other active prisons and with the entire area covered is still covered with CCTV cameras and apparently on patrol security.
