One afternoon, suffering from a sore throat and a blocked nose, I walked into a small pharmacy near my hotel located on the outskirts of the city.
The moment I opened the door, two women behind the counter looked surprised.
Foreign tourists do visit Vientiane, but almost never this quiet neighborhood.
My sudden appearance seemed to completely change the atmosphere inside the shop.
The pharmacist wearing glasses and a white coat had bright skin and a very cute face.
When I told her that my throat hurt, something unexpected happened.
Instead of the patient looking sick…
she suddenly started blushing.
She carefully listened to my symptoms and began looking for medicine with a worried expression on her face.
When I told her I didn’t have a fever, she visibly relaxed, as if she had been personally concerned about my health.
Meanwhile, the female employee standing beside her also seemed nervous.
For a brief moment, I thought about asking the pharmacist for her contact information and inviting her out for coffee.
But asking someone out while buying cold medicine didn’t feel very polite.
And with her coworker standing right next to her, I didn’t want to create an awkward situation between them.
So I simply paid for the medicine and left.
But when I opened the door and looked back, the pharmacist was watching my back with a quiet, mournful expression.
Her eyes seemed to say:
"Come back when you're feeling better… I'll be waiting."
Sometimes the most memorable moments during travel are the quiet ones.
A small pharmacy.
Two kind strangers.
And a moment that stayed in my memory long after I left the city.
This is another story from Unfinished Memories in Southeast Asia.
