Title: Aging Disrupts Prefrontal Code for Emotions.
Session: Oral Session
Speaker: Gargi Majumdar
Abstract: Affective experiences drive complex social behavior and guide decision making, which is why its change with age has been an important area of research. Empirical evidence suggests a positivity bias in older individuals[sup]1[/sup], though opposing findings challenge its significance[sup]2[/sup]. Moreover, owing to the lack of a theoretical basis, the neural findings remain poorly understood. Using a large-scale neuroimaging dataset on a naturalistic movie-watching task, we investigated the representational and computational dynamics underlying the differential emotional experiences in older individuals revealing a crucial role of the prefrontal regions (PFC). Although several prefrontal regions have been previously implicated in emotion regulation, their role in driving emotional experience is only beginning to be understood[sup]3[/sup]. We found that age related changes in emotion stems from miscalibrated predictions of outcome uncertainty leading to their idiosyncratic emotional responses. This extends our previous work on the crucial role of uncertainty in modulating emotion dynamics in healthy aging[sup]4[/sup].
