The name "Tubac" is derived from the indigenous word "Cuwak," meaning "place of dark water" in English. This name underwent a transformation through Hispanic influence, initially being adopted into Spanish as "Tubaca." Over time and through linguistic evolution, the name was shortened by dropping the final "a," resulting in the contemporary designation "Tubac."

The climate in this town is typical of the desert Southwest, with scorching hot summers and mild winters. The region benefits from a "high desert" climate, which brings cooler temperatures than the lower desert areas.

Historically, Tubac holds the distinction of being the original Spanish colonial garrison in Arizona, dating back to 1752. It was a pivotal point on the Camino Real from Mexico to California and the launch site of an expedition in 1775 that would lead to the founding of San Francisco. Over the years, Tubac has seen significant events, such as the Odham Uprising, Apache attacks, and a period as a mining boomtown. It has undergone several cycles of depopulation and resurgence, with the most recent renaissance beginning in the 1930s as an artists' colony, a status it retains today.
