Oregon luthier Mark Gaiero combines modern tonality and aesthetics with a devotion to using sustainable and non-threatened wood species in his builds. On this OM-C, the former Somogyi apprentice introduces us to West Coast Douglas fir as a soundboard, and we're already wondering why we don't see this tight-grained wood on guitars more often! While it's not technically a true fir, pine or spruce, it is in the Pinacaea family with the spruces, and shares some of the same characteristics. Mark has paired it with Bastogne walnut, a hybrid of English and Claro walnut that combines the color and figuring of Claro with the smoky grain lines of English. The resulting tone is balanced and warm, with a modest decay and mellow highs. The quick response reminds one of cedar, while the blend of overtones and sustain feels between that of mahogany and rosewood, making for a perfect fingerstyle guitar and light strummer.
