In 1987, Pet Shop Boys performed a synthpop version of "Always on My Mind" on Love Me Tender, a television special on the ITV network in the UK. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Presley's death, the program showed several popular artists of the time performing different versions of their hits. The presentation of the Pet Shop Boys was so well received that the duo decided to record the song and release it as a single.
This version became the Christmas single number one of the year. He was at the top of the charts for four weeks in all, and reached number 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100.2 3
In November 2004, The Daily Telegraph placed the version number 2 on the list of the fifty most successful versions of all time.4 In October 2014, a BBC-complicated public poll announced that the song was voted as the best cover-version of all time.
