The Milton Keynes Muslim Association (MKMA) formally came into being as a Charity on 5th February 2007. MKMA took over from a very successful Milton Keynes Jumah Society (MKJS) which had organised the Friday prayers in Fishermead, Ramadan events, talks and other activities aimed to help the Muslim community in Milton Keynes.
With an ever increasing Muslim population in Milton Keynes and the more attention that Islam was receiving by not just the press but also the public it was felt that the needs and requirement of MK citizens had outgrown MKJS. The MKJS disbanded and a fresh new organisation (MKMA) was born with a wider scope and a new ethos.
Its affairs are managed by a core of Trustees and an Executive Committee, with the active involvement of a broad spectrum of the Muslim community in Milton Keynes. The organisation is also guided by a Shura or group of advisors who are regularly consulted.
The community the MKMA represents has held Friday prayers in the same centre and church for more than a decade. Since 2007 it has held Eid prayers, with more than 1,000 people attending each time. The organisation runs regular talks, classes and sports activities as well as the 'Olive Branch' Madressa. The MKMA also organises Eid celebrations and other social events. Currently, providing all these services involves hiring a number of different venues, which is far from ideal.
The MKMA's most notable initiatives include sponsored treks up Mount Snowdon involving 50-100 people and Ramadan FM, the city's first Ramadan radio station which first aired in 2009. Ramadan FM is extremely popular with Muslims in Milton Keynes during the holy month, and is highly successful in motivating and involving the community.
The MKMA is often the first point of contact for Muslims coming to the city, or those wishing to learn more about the faith or take Shahada.
