Grand Seiko Pays Tribute to the Transitioning Sky Over Lake Suwa and Japanese Art in Two New USA-Exclusive Limited Editions
To celebrate the formation of Grand Seiko Corporation of America in 2018, Grand Seiko introduced three limited edition models inspired by the theme of kirazuri. Meaning "sparkling painting," kirazuri is found in the Japanese art of woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e. Hugely popular during the Edo era, ukiyo-e often incorporates mica powder to impart a sparkling shimmer. For 2024, Grand Seiko introduces the SBGA507 and SBGA509 as USA exclusives, each paying tribute to kirazuri and the symbolic limited variations from 2018.

The finely textured dials create a sparkling effect reminiscent of a kirazuri ukiyo-e woodblock print with a beautiful interplay of light and shadow. The SBGA509 and SBGA507 take inspiration from the transitioning sky over Lake Suwa—a scene often depicted in ukiyo-e paintings of the past—while honoring the area where Grand Seiko's Spring Drive movements are made. With its dusty rose hue, the dial of the SBGA509 is reminiscent of an early sunrise, while the SBGA507 harkens to the transition of the evening sky with its cool blue dial.
The revolutionary Spring Drive Automatic Caliber 9R65 powers these new limited editions, celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2024. The first Spring Drive movement introduced by Grand Seiko, the Caliber 9R65, utilizes the motive force of the unwinding mainspring to drive the hands and regulate the time through its unique Tri-Synchro Regulator. This mechanism uses three forms of energy: 1—mechanical energy to generate, 2—electricity, and 3—electromagnetic energy to control the speed of unwinding and, in turn, the accuracy. As a result, the 9R65 achieves an accuracy of ± 15 seconds per month and a power reserve of approximately 72 hours.
The 44GS case design was developed in 1967 and is credited with establishing the Grand Seiko Style, the design grammar that defined all Grand Seiko watches moving forward. It also set forth the nine principles that gave Grand Seiko watches their distinguished aesthetic. As a modern reinterpretation of this design, the new USA-exclusive limited editions feature stainless steel cases and bracelets.
The USA-exclusive limited editions SBGA507 and SBGA509 will be limited to 300 pieces each and will be available for $5,600 at Grand Seiko boutiques, select authorized retail partners, and online at Grand Seiko Boutique Online.
