Hey its Raj from 3CB.
Chelsea central midfielder Mateo Kovacic rolled his left ankle in the FA Cup Semis vs Crystal Palace and was subbed off a few minutes later after trying to play through it.
This mechanism of injury likely means this is an inversion ankle sprain which stresses the outer ankle ligaments.
Severity & Return timeline
Mateo’s return timeline depends on the severity of the injury, with grade 1 tears ranging from day today to 10 days, grade 2 typically 3-4 weeks, and grade 3 ruptures typically 4-6 weeks. There’s also possibility for a fracture which extends the timeline to 6+ weeks.
Assessment ongoing
We’ve gotten a few updates on the injury. Firstly, manager Tomas Tuchel commented that Kovacic was in pain and there was significant swelling. However, Mateo was also seen leaving the stadium fully weight-bearing with the ankle in a compression wrap and stirrup brace used for ankle sprains. This nearly surely means he has no fracture and the physios likely expect that it’s not a severe injury based on the examination and assessment.
Ankle sprains can evolve very quickly over the first few days and he’ll get follow-up imaging as well. I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
