What hiking etiquette should I address next?
The reaction to my recent trail etiquette posts has been… revealing. And apparently some people think abandoning someone on a hike, what the internet now calls “alpine divorce”, is just relationship drama.
It’s not. Search and rescue teams across the U.S. consistently report that a meaningful percentage of incidents involve hikers who become separated from their group or partner and can’t safely self rescue.
When you leave someone behind on a trail, whether intentionally or through careless pacing, you increase risk in three ways:
1) navigation errors
2) injury without assistance
3) delayed emergency response
On shared public lands, responsible hikers communicate, match the group’s slowest pace, and make sure everyone gets out safely.
