Laura Cannell came to our attention via adopted North East musical hero Rhodri Davies, who she’s collaborated and recorded with. She also collaborates with Charles Hayward (This Heat) and Ralph Cumbers (Bass Clef) in the trio Oscillanz. But it was her solo album Quick Sparrows Over The Black Earth that stopped us dead in our tracks. Laura plays fiddle with deconstructed viol bow – hairs over the top of the fiddle and stick underneath, giving a 4 string hurdy-gurdy effect – and double recorders, and she recorded the album in her local church to beautifully haunting effect. (The album has also since been remixed by the likes of Hacker Farm, Kemper Norton, Luke Abbott and Ekoplekz for a digital release).
Laura casually straddles the imaginary divide between the medieval music she references in her own solo playing and the often chip-bound chops of her various collaborators, her unbounded musical expression leaving you helplessly transfixed.
