Step 1: Calculate the Total Weight to be Supported
Sum the following:
• Weight of the boat (let’s assume ~300 lbs. for a 1448 aluminum Jon boat)
• Weight of the motor (assume ~100 lbs. for a small outboard)
• Weight of passengers and gear (estimate, e.g., 500-1,000 lbs.)
Assume a total weight of 1,400 lbs.
Step 2: Determine the Volume of Foam Needed
Each cubic foot of foam provides about 62.4 lbs. of buoyancy (equal to the weight of water displaced).
Volume of foam needed (in cubic feet)} = Total weight to support / Buoyancy per cubic foot
1400 lbs. / 62.4lbs per cubic feet = 22.4 cubic feet
