Charles "Baby" Tate recorded this song in 1960 for the movie "The Blues" by Samuel Charters. It's an adaptation of a John Lee Hooker song. Hooker played it in open A but Baby Tate played it in standard tuning key of A, in his typical Carolina style.

I also recorded (and teach it https://www.daddystovepipe.com/guitar...) Baby Tate's fine instrumental called "Bad Blues"
Sadly, Baby Tate, didn't live long enough to enjoy the country blues renaissance in the 70ies, he died of a heart attack, only 40 years old, in 1970.
