In this first episode of Wildest Ones, I step in front of the camera to explain why this series exists.

I’m Simon Owen, filmmaker, wildlife photographer & filmmaker and Ambassador for Lancashire Wildlife Trust. This is my journey from growing up in Manchester and shooting skate videos to finding resilience, clarity and perspective in the wild landscapes of Lancashire.

Over the last decade, through personal struggles, business pressure and the weight of responsibility, I found something unexpected in nature. Time spent on the moors. A barn owl drifting across the skyline. Hours waiting quietly with a camera. The wild did not fix everything, but it showed up.

This film explores the connection between nature and mental wellbeing, and why protecting the natural world matters more than ever. If we lose the wild, we lose more than landscapes. We lose something essential in ourselves.

Wildest Ones is a short documentary series exploring how connection to nature can shape identity, support mental health and inspire conservation.
