Grain Marketing: Honest Thoughts on Technical Analysis and Team-Based Strategies
Before we dive in, we want to preface this discussion by saying neither Josh nor I are professional grain marketers. We do our own marketing for our operations, and nothing we share should be taken as formal advice. These are simply our thoughts and opinions—use your own discretion when applying them to your operation.
The Art and Science of Grain Marketing
Grain marketing is one of those subjects that can make your head spin. We’ve all been there—trying to predict market cycles, decipher support and resistance levels, and figure out the right time to sell our crops. For instance, I remember discussing with Josh about whether our current nitrogen management strategy was impacting yield. I was questioning if streaming nitrogen ahead of the planter might lead to a yield drag, while others said it could work if executed correctly. The conversation quickly shifted to grain marketing—how do we sell our bushels at the highest possible price once we’ve produced them?
Technical Analysis: From Couch Learning to Field Application
During the COVID lockdown, I dove into technical analysis. I learned to identify resistance and support levels, which has been a game changer. For example, I recall we were hitting a resistance level at the 4:50 mark. One marketer at an expo in Lincoln, Chirpen, and I got into a debate about what would happen if we broke that resistance. I argued that if we hit 4:60, that should be our next level of focus. I advised him to look at the day chart rather than just the hourly chart—a simple shift in perspective that can have huge implications for decision-making.
Understanding where those support and resistance levels are is crucial. When a farmer tells me that prices are breaking through key resistance, it tells me when it might be time to consider selling or hedging. While many of us use technical analysis as a tool to protect our positions, it’s important to balance it with fundamental analysis. Consider factors like carry-over stocks from previous years—if our carry-over is low, that can drive prices higher for two years, even if market conditions seem otherwise.
Green Marketing and Agronomy: Combining the Best of Both Worlds
We’ve also touched on green marketing—although we haven’t delved deeply into topics like moon phases and their correlation with crop performance, the idea is to integrate agronomy marketing with overall market strategies. Whether you’re focused on the fundamentals of nutrient management or the technical aspects of market cycles, a well-rounded approach is essential. Every situation is different, and your marketing plan should reflect the unique aspects of your operation.
The Value of a Strong Network
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that no one can do it all alone. Our network is everything. I’ve seen firsthand how connecting with other farmers—exchanging ideas on everything from nitrogen fertilizer for plants to organic phosphorus fertilizer strategies—can dramatically improve both our operations and our outlook. Whether it’s technical analysis or discussing market cycles, these honest conversations help us all make better decisions.
In Conclusion
Grain marketing is complex, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By blending technical analysis with fundamental strategies and leveraging a strong network, we can navigate market cycles more effectively. Remember, our goal as farmers is to produce bushels at the highest possible ROI—not just chasing bushels for the sake of it, but building a sustainable, profitable future.
