Historically this period in beauty was all about pale complexions and flushed cheeks. Men and women alike wore powder makeup to cover up the scars from small pox. These powders contained lead which is highly poisonous and even more damaging to the skin. Rouge was also all the rage during this time. People loved the strong contrast of red blush against pale skin.
