Straightness measurement determines how closely a surface or axis follows a perfectly straight line. It evaluates deviations caused by manufacturing errors, wear, or misalignment. Methods commonly used include mechanical straightedges with feeler gauges, optical methods like autocollimators, and precision instruments such as dial indicators on surface plates. Modern systems may use laser alignment tools or coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) for higher accuracy. Straightness is assessed by comparing measured deviations to allowable tolerances specified in engineering drawings. Accurate straightness measurement ensures proper function, reduces friction, prevents misalignment, and improves overall performance in machine components, guideways, shafts, and structural assemblies.
