Modern systems may use laser alignment tools or coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) for higher accuracy. Straightness is assessed by comparing measured deviations to allowable tolerances specified in engineering drawings. Accurate straightness measurement ensures proper function, reduces friction, prevents misalignment, and improves overall performance in machine components, guideways, shafts, and structural assemblies.
