It’s back to school for Dr Thomas Spain, as he takes us on a tour of Southern Railway V Class (or Schools Class) Cheltenham.
Designed by Richard Maunsell (pronounced Mansell), these locomotives were built between 1930–1935 and served the Southern Railway until they were withdrawn in 1962.
Regarded as one of the Southern Railway's finest locos, the Schools Class brought ample pulling power in a more compact, tunnel-friendly shape perfectly suited to the tunnels of the lines it would operate on.
This episode of Curator with a Camera was filmed at the National Railway Museum in York. To find out more about the museum, head here: https://www.railwaymuseum.org.uk/
