A strong EHCP should be specific, detailed, and measurable. If it isn’t, it is legally weak.

Here’s what your child’s EHCP should include but most don’t:
1. Specific provision, not broad promises
Every need in Section B should link directly to a provision in Section F.
Instead of “access to speech therapy,” it should say: “Weekly one-hour speech and language therapy delivered by a qualified SALT, with follow-up exercises supervised by a trained TA.”

2. Clear frequency and delivery
Words like “regular,” “as required,” or “ongoing” are too vague. The law requires exact timings: daily, weekly, termly. Each must say who provides it and how long it lasts.

3. Support across the whole day
EHCPs should cover social, emotional, and sensory needs not just academic ones. This includes lunchtime support, calm-space access, and transitions between lessons or settings.

4. Training for staff
If staff need training to meet your child’s needs, that can and should be written into Section F. The right provision only works if staff know how to deliver it.

5. Monitoring and accountability
Section E should describe clear outcomes and review points. Without them, schools can claim progress without proof.
Most EHCPs fail because they’re written around what schools can offer, not what the child truly needs. The law says the plan must reflect the child, not the budget.
