This talk begins with a brief look at the growth of Intel's micropro-cessor line from 1971 (4004) through 1993 (Pentium™ Processor). Then, the key micro-architecture features on the Pentium Processor
(superscalar, branch prediction, pipelined floating point, etc.) are introduced, and their effectiveness is measured on the SPECint 92 benchmark suite, using built-in performance monitoring features. Next, the compiler technology co-developed with the Pentium Processor is described and is illustrated by an animation of the instruction flow through the instruction pipeline. The talk concludes with a comparison of the Pentium Processor and the Intel486™ CPU executing the SPECint 92 and SPECfp 92 benchmark suites as compiled by three different compilers, summarizing the performance benefits of the hardware and compiler techniques discussed earlier.
