In 1969, Jethro Tull delivered an electrifying rendition of “Bourée” on the French television show La Joconde.
The performance reimagined Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Bourrée in E minor” as a swinging, flute-driven exploration that defied genre and era alike.
Frontman Ian Anderson exhibits superb musicality and balance alike. He stands poised on one leg, kicking the other out as if conducting with his whole body.
Next to him, Glenn Cornick’s bass dances in counterpoint, anchoring the fugue-like interplay with jazz fluency.
More than a performance, it’s a unique cultural artifact: a British band reinterpreting a German Baroque piece through an American jazz lens on French television, all under the influence of late-‘60s experimentation.
In front of a deliciously psychedelic backdrop full of bright colors and a pop art Mona Lisa, Jethro Tull summoned a vision of music unbound by category.
