મિત્રો પાવાગઢ નું નામ સાંભળતા જ મહાકાળી માંની ભક્તિમાં ઉતરી જવાનું સૌ કોઈનું મન થતું હોય છે. 51 શક્તિપીઠો માનું એક શક્તિપીઠ પાવાગઢ, મહાકાળી માં ના નામે આખા વિશ્વમાં પ્રસિદ્ધ છે. આ પવિત્ર જગ્યા પંચમહાલ જિલ્લાના હાલોલ થી 15 થી 20 કિલોમીટર દૂર આવેલું છે. મિત્રો કહેવાય છે કે હજાર વર્ષ પહેલાં આ સ્થળે મહાધરતીકંપ આવ્યો હતો. અને ફાટેલા જ્વાળામુખીમાંથી ડુંગરનું નિર્માણ થયું હતું. એવું પણ માનવામાં આવે છે કે આ પર્વત જેટલો બહાર દેખાય છે તેટલો જ જમીન ની અંદર પણ છે. માત્ર પાભાગ જેટલો બહાર હોવાથી તેનું નામ પાવાગઢ પડ્યું છે.

પુરાણો અનુસાર ઘણા વર્ષો પહેલા આ જગ્યા પર મહર્ષિ વિશ્વામિત્ર વાસ કરતા હતા. અને તેણે શિખરના ટોચ પર માં કાલિકા માતાની સ્થાપના કરી હતી. આ મંદિર દરિયાની સપાટીથી લગભગ 2730 ફૂટ ઊંચાઈ પર આવેલું છે. આ યાત્રાધામ તળેટી, માચી અને માકાલિકા માતાનું મંદિર એમ ત્રણ ભાગમાં વહેંચાયેલું છે. આ પાવનભૂમિ ઉપર કુદરતી સૌંદર્યનો પ્રવાસીઓ મન ભરીને આનંદ માણે છે. નવરાત્રીના દિવસોમાં પાવાગઢનો મહિમા ખૂબ જ વધી જાય છે. આ સ્થળ પર દક્ષિણ દિશા તરફ બેસેલા મહાકાલી માની મૂર્તિ સ્થાપિત છે. તેથી તેનું મહત્વ તાંત્રિક ઊર્જામાં વધી જાય છે.

જો આ મંદિરના ઇતિહાસની વાત કરીએ તો એવું માનવામાં આવે છે કે ઘણા વર્ષો પહેલા અહી ફતેપુરના રાજાઓ રાજ કરતા હતા. તેઓ વંશ પરંપરાગત રીતે માતાના ભક્ત હતા. તો તેમણે માતામાં શ્રદ્ધા પણ અપરંપાર હતી. તેઓ કાળકા માતાને કુળદેવી તરીકે પૂજતા.. એવું કહેવાય છે કે દર નવરાત્રિના તહેવાર દરમિયાન મહાકાળી માં ત્યાં ગરબે રમવા માટે આવતા હતા.
