Mannerheimin Linjalla is a Finnish wartime song about the
Mannerheim defensive line on the Karelian
Isthmus, of course named after the legendary Baron
and Marshall of Finland, Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim.
The "Hakkapeliittas" mentioned in the song were
Finnish Light Cavalry that served with the Swedes in the
Thirty Years War. The Lottas mentioned are Finnish women of the
"Lotta Svärd", an auxiliary/logistical paramilitary force
that was formed in 1918 during the Finnish Civil War.
The Lottas were known particularly for their charity/
volunteer social work during the 20's and 30's, but
during the Second World War, became an important
auxiliary force of the Finnish Military, working in
hospitals and foward air raid spotting positions.
