Wood fossils are rare and occur in only some places of the world. Thiruvakkarai area comes under Cuddalore sandstone
Formation which is a sedimentary deposit of Mio-Pliocene
age.A large outcrop of cuddalore sandstone can be found 1-2
km east of national fossil wood park. The foundation stone
situated in Thiruvakkarai wood fossil site depicts that, about
20 Million years ago the tree parts and trunks are brought
from forests which may be situated in the nearby area, by
the help of rivers it may have washed out from that place and
deposited in water bodies along with the sediments. Due to
Petrification process, the organic matter was replaced by silica(Inorganic).
The Annular rings of trees are seen till now. (12.018982,
79.656079). The roots, barks, and branches are not seen in
any of the wood fossils indicating that the origin of those
fossilized trees are not in the present place. The fossilized
parts of trees are seen not only in the monument location,
also around 247 Acres around it. European Naturalist
M.Sonneret in 1781 documented the existence of fossilised
woods from Tiruvakkarai. Geological survey of India is
protecting these wood fossils since 1957.Newly a museum is
being build at cost of 5 crore and more and more efforts are
being taken to protect this area .I would like thank
DR.Sundaram assistant geologist for explaining us about the
geology of the region and for taking us to area next to the
fossil wood park where we saw large cuddalore sandstone
formations.
