In this video you will see a basic difference between heated and unheated Ruby gemstone under microscope. Inside heated piece you can identify lot of bubbles cracks ad messy internal but there is no bubble visible inside unheated piece and the pattern is so complicated inside it.
Heating gemstones generally enhances their color. They can be lightened, darkened, or changed through heat treatment. For example, white sapphires can be heated and turned blue, because that is a more desirable color in sapphires. Heat treatment is applied to all shades of sapphire, but mostly to achieve the highly sought-after Royal Blue color as it is extremely rare to find that color in nature. Heating sapphires also enhances their clarity! When the stones are heated, it’s almost as if the imperfections are melted.
Although other treatments may be frowned upon within the jewelry industry, heat treatment is a common and accepted practice! Instead of thinking of it as a treatment, think of it as an enhancement. When buying a sapphire, it is expected that the stone you purchase has been heated, unless specifically stated that it hasn’t.
Although heat treatment does not diminish the value of a stone, an unheated sapphire of a good color will be much more valuable than an unheated one because of its rarity. For example, we have a heated 2.6 ct sapphire that values $9568, whereas a non-heated and slightly lighter sapphire in almost the same size is worth $9250. That is because it was naturally found in this extremely sought-after color. Comparably, a paler heated sapphire also in the same size is valued at $1220. This jump in the price is due to the heat treatment.
