Sidney Poitier was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida, but he spent his early years in the Bahamas. His parents, Evelyn and Reginald Poitier, were Bahamian farmers who traveled frequently to Miami to sell their tomato crops. Sidney was born prematurely while his parents were visiting Miami, making him a U.S. citizen by birth. He grew up on Cat Island in the Bahamas, a place with no electricity, running water, or paved roads, which contributed to his humble and modest upbringing.
When he was 15, Poitier moved to Miami to live with his brother, but he soon found the racial segregation and discrimination intolerable. Seeking a better life, he moved to New York City at the age of 16. There, he worked various odd jobs and faced numerous challenges, including learning to read, which he did with the help of a kind waiter he met while working as a dishwasher.
