2022 was the year in which the world woke up to geopolitical risk. Banks are particularly exposed, both through their own and their customers’ operations. While banks have long been required to have sophisticated risk functions, geopolitical risk has traditionally had a relatively low profile. Now that it can be clearly seen as an upstream risk for most of the risks which banks routinely monitor, banks and their boards need to develop more sophisticated conceptual frameworks for addressing it as well as clear accountable structures for day -to-day geopolitical risk management.
