Wave scan (or sometimes called grain scan) takes a sample and then, as the name implies, scans through it. Sounds kind of lame when you put it in such mundane terms but it really can produce some interesting timbres. As you’ll see in the lesson there are a lot of ways you can play through a sample and all of them will result in a unique timbre. Using modulators and other FX you can distort and twist things even further. We’re using Reaktor’s Travelizer ensemble in this video but it’s also worth seeking out and experimenting with Skanner XT. The Skanner XT is a hybrid instrument that does both wavescan and traditional subtractive synthesis.
