The Hub's founder, Luba Vangelova, talks with Dr. Peter Gray—research professor of psychology and neuroscience at Boston College, and the author of the book Free to Learn, as well as numerous academic papers and popular articles—about whether there is a time and place for "pushing" (requiring/compelling) young people to do things they may not choose to do themselves.
Topics covered in this conversation include:
-- Why there is no black and white answer to such a question, and what factors can influence a decision
-- An activity parents should push their children to do much more than they currently do, and why doing household chores from an early age can benefit children (allowing them to see themselves as able contributors, rather than weak people who have to be helped all the time)
-- Why pushing children, more generally, can backfire
-- How children can find their way in life, and learn to direct their own lives, without being pushed
-- The role of parents and other adults in children's growth and development, and how that differs from the role of peers (also, why the trend of parents substituting themselves for friends for their children can't adequately meet children's needs)
-- The unpopularity of unsolicited advice among all age groups; why older cultures found it insulting to be taught things in a directed way; and how assistance can be provided more subtly when called for, without directing and compelling
-- Exceptions when more forceful approaches, and consequences, may be warranted
