7. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Ezio Scandola, protester:
"We'll pay. We're talking about €6 billion ($7.08 billion), but where will it come from? From Italian taxpayers, and it won't be spent on healthcare, education, or social services—services that citizens need."

10. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Filippo Comencini, protester:
"We are here because we believe that these Olympics are hypocritical, are unsustainable and are also bloody. We have explained it in different ways, not only because it is enough to look at how unsustainable the conditions are in which we find ourselves today and in which Verona has been in for a month. An inaccessible city, a city abused by a great event like this that has shown no respect for the territories."

STORYLINE:
Protesters gathered in Verona, Italy, on Sunday ahead of the Winter Olympics closing ceremony, marching against what they said was an “unsustainable” and “bloody” event.
Deemed the “Olympics No Thanks” demonstration, the march was meant to protest the challenge of the economic, environmental and political impact of the Winter Games.
“We are here because we want to try to raise attention, because even if they claimed these as sustainable Olympic Games, effectively they turned out to be unsustainable,” said Rosa Paro, of Extinction Rebellion, a climate crisis activist group.
“They employed a lot of public money for structures that will only be used during the Olympics, instead of building infrastructures that would last in time,” she added.
Olympics organizers have pledged that virtually all of the electricity needed to power the games would be clean, from lighting up venues to making snow.
Italy’s largest electricity company, Enel, guaranteed the supply of entirely certified renewable electricity for event venues.
Enel is supplying 85 gigawatt-hours of power for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, covering the events’ energy demand by purchasing “guarantee of origin” (GO) certificates from renewable energy producers.
Created in Europe in 2001, each certificate represents one megawatt-hour of electricity generated from certified renewable sources and is cancelled once used to avoid double counting.
Supporters say the system promotes decarbonization, while critics argue it does not necessarily make Italy’s overall energy mix cleaner, noting the Games can only be as sustainable as the country’s broader power supply.
Protesters also criticized the amount of money put into the Games.
The protest tapered off by Sunday evening.
