In this video, we narrate the story of Marhab from the Battle of Khaybar, a figure known for his arrogance and defiance. Marhab led the forces of Khaybar with pride, carrying a sword engraved with the warning: “Whoever tastes this sword will be destroyed.”
Historical sources mention that Marhab’s mother or foster mother had prophetic knowledge and warned him not to fight a warrior who invoked the name of a lion — a warning that Marhab ignored, leading to his downfall.
According to Shia historical sources, Amir al-Mu’minin Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) was the one who ultimately defeated Marhab. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had announced that the flag of Khaybar would be given to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. That honor was given to Imam Ali (AS), even while he was suffering from an eye ailment — which was miraculously cured by the Prophet ﷺ.
When Marhab entered the battlefield, full of arrogance, Imam Ali (AS) responded with his famous Rajaz, declaring himself Haydar, the lion of Allah. With a single strike, Imam Ali (AS) ended Marhab’s life, opening the path to the victory of Khaybar.
This story demonstrates how arrogance and pride are defeated by faith, and highlights the courage and determination of Imam Ali (AS) in Islamic history.
