Speeduino/Megasquirt Crank Sensor
Hall effect crankshaft position sensor – BMW E36
This can be purchased for as little as £6.50 ($9) – see link below.
In this video I am using the E36 crank sensor and a 160mm diameter 36 – 1 trigger wheel.
Sensor connections.
Test wiring.
The +5volt is to pull the signal voltage up to 5 volts when the sensor is switched off, this is done by a jumper on the Speeduino board.
My Test Setup.
The trigger-wheel and sensor are mounted in a lathe with ~1.5mm air-gap.
The lathe is set to 1000rpm.
The signal output, from the sensor, is connected to an oscilloscope.
The lathe is switched on and runs up to speed (1000rpm), then switched off, running down to 0 rpm.
A clean, digital square wave is produced and you can also see the missing tooth.
Air Gap
The air gap was increased from 1.5mm until the signal dropped out, this was at about 6mm.
I hope this proves useful.
Thanks for watching.
