Annually Yuvsatta (youth for peace)-an NGO alongwith Department of Environment, Forests & Wildlife, Chandigarh Administration organizes migratory birds welcome visits for School students. And from December 3, 2018, they organized a weeklong ‘Migratory Bird Watching Visits’ for over 500 local School students.
Nobody is allowed to play loud music or burst firecrackers near the Sukhna Lake and the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary as that might disturb the lifestyle of birds and animals. Every year hundreds of migratory birds travel thousands of miles to reach Sukhna Lake, to escape the harsh cold of their habitats. They come from places like Siberia, China and Afghanistan. These are brahmi ducks, common pochards, grebes, geese, marsh harriers, bar-headed goose, grey heron, coots, stilts, hill kingfisher, mallard, pintail, cormorants, storks and sandpipers etc.
These migratory birds start arriving in the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary from early November and their stay lasts till March or April, depending on the climatic conditions. These birds are very sensitive; so accordingly arrangements are made to make the environment conducive for them.
