Arnold Scaasi: Fashion, Glamour, and Red Carpet Drama

Who is looking for a major red carpet moment? I know with award season coming up there is going to be a lack of stars and gowns, so we thought we’d give you some glamour by designer Arnold Scaasi. Scaasi studied at the Chambre Syndical in France, he went on to work for the couture house of Paquin, then on with Charles James in New York. Scaasi is known for his exuberant designs with colorful embellishments of if sequins, rhinestones, feathers, and prints.

Scaasi started his own label in the 1950s, and was the go-to-designer for socialites who wanted to make a statement. He dressed Truman Capote’s swans for mask balls, and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy when JFK was a senator in Massachusetts. Scaasi’s most noteworthy creations were worn by Barbra Streisand, one ensemble was a sheer black chiffon with sequins with an exaggerated bell bottom for the 1969 academy awards.

Scaasi’s designs are mirrored by contemporary brands today from Olivier’s pieces for Balmain, The Attico, Alessandra Rich, and even Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. His designs had volume and opulence that never lose their charm.
