Ontario school boards have been debating whether to adopt policies addressing anti-Palestinian racism (APR) — and the issue has become a flashpoint for many Jewish families.
Although the Ontario government placed half a dozen school boards, including in Toronto and Ottawa, under ministry supervision recently — effectively pausing official discussions for now — the broader debate has not gone away. It's just moved.
For weeks, Mitchell Consky, The Canadian Jewish News’s education and campus reporter, has been investigating:
• Who is behind the push to adopt APR policies
• Why some Jewish families, Jewish school staff and Jewish human rights advocates are raising concerns
• How Palestinian families and their allies see the issue
• What happens next
His reporting also explores how some APR advocates who say Canada’s officially adopt3ed definition of antisemitism — the IHRA definition — is, by itself APR, yet received federal funding.
In this episode of The CJN’s North Star podcast, Consky joins host Ellin Bessner to explain what APR is, why the debate escalated, and where it’s now playing out across the province.
