APC, NNPP Reject Proposed US Sanctions on Kwankwaso Over Religious Freedom Allegations

Описание: The All Progressives Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party have strongly opposed a proposed United States bill seeking visa bans and asset freezes against former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and two Miyetti Allah groups over alleged religious freedom violations.

The bill, titled The Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, was introduced in the US House of Representatives and recommends sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Act. US lawmaker Riley Moore accused Kwankwaso of complicity in anti-Christian violence, referencing Kano State’s adoption of Sharia law.

Reacting to the development, the APC described the proposed sanctions as premature and inconsistent with democratic principles, arguing that punitive measures based solely on allegations undermine due process and fair hearing. Party spokesperson Bala Ibrahim stated that no individual’s freedom of movement should be restricted without credible investigation and substantiated evidence.

The NNPP also rejected the proposal, labelling it political blackmail and expressing shock at Kwankwaso’s inclusion. The party maintained that the former governor has no links to religious extremism and pointed to his past efforts in combating Boko Haram, as well as his engagement with Christian leaders. It further questioned why other northern governors who implemented Sharia law were not similarly mentioned in the proposed legislation.

The controversy introduces a new dimension to Nigeria–US relations and raises questions about international accountability measures, domestic politics, and religious freedom debates.
